Vulcanised Indian Rubber (VIR) Cables
One of the most commonly used historic cables around Sydney is the Vulcanised Indian Rubber cable. These wires are cotton/rubber insulated, have no outer sheath and generally don’t include an earth wire. With age (and these are all old by now) the rubber cracks and the cotton fades/perishes, and falls off.
Most of the remaining old VIR wiring is by now in a dangerous condition, and properties with this wiring are in urgent need of rewiring. These VIR wires are a significant safety risk – most notably at termination points.
If anyone ever encounters these wires with the insulation having fallen off, this means that the conductors are bare, most often unsupported and having the live and neutrals too close to each other. It is very important NOT TO TOUCH or MOVE these wires at all (even the smallest movement can short) and have the wires replace as soon as possible.
