A Heat Pump is a device that transfers heat energy from outside air to a heat sink, the thermal energy is then used by the pump by absorbing heat from a cold space and releasing it into a warmer one. The amount of power that it takes to do this work is a small amount.

Heat Pump is a term which is usually referred to in Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning devices, which are used for space heating or cooling.

A Heat Pump which is being used to heat up space, works on a similar principle to that of a refrigerator , although in a different direction. It releases heat into the cold space, as opposed to the surrounding environment. Usually the heat pumps draw heat from the external air or the ground and Reversible Heat Pumps work in both directions allowing you to both heat and cool space, depending on your wishes and needs.

Heat pumps can also be used for water heating, for example, heating up water in a swimming pool, or water for use which is pottable. This works by extracting heat from the air and transferring it to a water tank.
