There are plenty of electricians out there, so how do you know whom you can trust?

A job done poorly, or worse, done incorrectly, can have costly and potentially dangerous consequences to you, your family or your business. This is why it is so vital that the electrician you hire is a trustworthy one.

Read on to learn how to tell if your electrician is trustworthy…

How Can You Tell A Trustworthy Electrician?

With so many choices available when searching for an electrician, how do you know if you’re choosing one who is trustworthy?

An electrician’s job, poorly done, is not just a costly mistake, but is potentially a dangerous one – the worst case scenario being possible injury or death.

When sorting through the selection criteria, firstly you must set out a definitive purpose – what is the reason why you are looking for an electrician, or an electrical business?

  • Do you need something electrical fixed or installed at home?
  • Are you a property manager requiring someone to repair an electrical issue at one of your managed properties?
  • Are you a business owner opening a new shop or office? Do you require a complete fit-out? Do you need the new rewiring done in an old place?
  • Are you a builder undertaking a new building or construction project and are looking for for a supplier / collaborator / subcontractor?

Once you have the scope of your job requirements more firmly sorted, you should then look into the following;

Licenced Electrician + Certificate of Compliance

Whatever your electrical requirements are, the bare minimum that any electrician must have is a license, and, if asked, they must be able to  present you with their license.

Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work

Electricians must submit a Certificate of Compliance for electrical work (CCEW) under the Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 and Electricity (Consumer Safety) Regulation 2015. A completed CCEW must be submitted within seven days of completing any safety and compliance test, on an electrical installation. This can only be done by licensees.

Reputation

This would be probably be one of the most distinguishing factors that sets different professionals apart. If an electrician comes recommended by friends, family or colleagues whom you trust, you know that this professional has exhibited the ability to meet or exceed their expectations and standards.

Further reviews / testimonials / feedback will help compound your opinion of them. If they are employed by a company, then looking into their background will also be helpful towards establishing your sense of trust in this electrician.

Training & Experience

As with all things, practice makes perfect, and you want someone who’s had lots and lots of practice before putting your home or business at stake in this person’s hands. You want to know that you placing your trust in someone who has done the job you are hiring them for before many times and is expert at it.

Keeps Up With Latest Industry Trends & Technologies

Despite the immense value of long-time experience, it is also crucial that a good electrician keeps up to date on industry trends, innovations and technologies. You want an electrician who will be able to provide you with the best possible solution – whatever your issue may be, and being as informed as possible of all that is available is the factor that will set a great electrician apart from a good one! An interest in the industry one works within only goes to further show their passion for their work and showcases the fact that this is more than just a job – it is a passion.

Practices Work Safety

Another marker of a trustworthy electrician is one who practices Work Safety. Anyone who qualified to do this work will know and understand the risks involved in cutting corners when it comes to Work Safety, and will also know that no risk is worth the consequences. A good electrician will not only be diligent about following proper work safety procedures with respect to himself and their staff, but will also focus on placing client safety as a point of priority.

Availability During Emergencies

This is not a point that many take into consideration, but realise the importance of when it is too late. You want your electrician available to you in case of emergency!

Good Communication & Honesty

If you could do the job yourself, you would not be reading this guide. You are hiring an electrician because you have something that needs to be done and in exchange for your payment, they are doing it for you – regardless of the size, scope or nature of the job. This is why good, open communication and honesty are such important and fundamental attributes to look for when hiring an electrician.

Someone who misunderstands your requirements, mis-communicates in any way or carries out the job dishonestly will have wasted your time, the money paid to them for the job as well as the time and money that will be further spent on correcting their poor work.

A good electrician will make you feel confident in the fact that they understand your needs and will communicate their solution to you clearly and elaborately. They should be able to answer any questions you have, and should be able to address any concerns you might raise.  A good electrician should instill in you a sense of confidence that they can handle any unforeseen issues that may arise, and you should feel secure int he fact that they will communicate with you in a manner that is timely, efficient and leaves the decision making power in your hands.
